1. What is Autocharge, and how does it work?

Autocharge is a functionality that enables your EV to start charging automatically when you plug in, no app or charging (RFID) tag is needed. Once enabled, your vehicle is identified via its fixed Media Access Control (MAC) address, and charging begins instantly at supported stations.

2. What are the benefits of using Autocharge?

Autocharge offers a smarter, faster, and more convenient charging experience. Key benefits include:

  • Hassle-Free Charging

Start charging instantly, no need to use the app or charging tag (RFID) at the station.

  • Time-Saving

Enjoy a quicker start to your charging session, especially useful during busy schedules or short stops.

  • Effortless in All Conditions

Perfect for use in bad weather, allowing you to stay in your vehicle without handling devices or cards.

  • Secure and Seamless Experience

Autocharge uses secure, vehicle-specific identification for modern, reliable charging, bringing simplicity to your everyday EV routine.

3. Are there any vehicles that don’t support AutoCharge?

Yes, you can quickly check if your vehicle supports AutoCharge right in the Virta app. Most vehicles with a CCS connector and a unique vehicle ID are compatible with AutoCharge. However, a few models may not meet these requirements, such as:

Audi e-tron (2018, some 2019) & Q4 e-tron

BMW iX1 & i7

Cupra Born

Lucid Air

Maxus eDeliver

Mazda MX-30

Rolls-Royce Spectre EV

Seat Mii electric

Skoda Citigo e-iV & Enyaq iV

Volkswagen e-Up, e-Golf, ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.Buzz

4. How can I check if my vehicle supports Autocharge?

Autocharge is available for vehicles with a fixed MAC address. Vehicle compatibility is checked during setup in the Virta app.

The setup prompt appears automatically when you start a regular charging session at an Autocharge-enabled station. If your vehicle is compatible, you can activate Autocharge. To access instructions, please navigate to: Profile > Charging Methods > Autocharge.

5. How can I activate Autocharge for my car?

Autocharge can only be activated while charging at a compatible station and if your vehicle supports the feature. To setup, please follow these steps:

  • Find a Compatible Charging Station

Use the Virta app to locate a station that supports Autocharge. Look for the “Autocharge” label in the station's information view.

  • Plug In Your Vehicle

Connect your EV to the charging station before initiating the charging session. This step is essential for the system to recognise your vehicle.

  • Start the Charging Session in the App

Launch the session using the Virta app. A pop-up notification will appear if your vehicle is eligible for Autocharge.

  • Complete the Autocharge Setup

Follow the on-screen instructions to finalise the Autocharge activation. Once complete, future charging sessions at compatible stations will start automatically. No app or charging tag is needed.

6. Can I enable Autocharge for more than one car?

Currently, only one car can be linked per account for Autocharge. This limitation ensures secure and accurate session tracking.

7. How can I identify charging stations that support Autocharge?

In the Virta mobile app, charging stations that support Autocharge are marked with an "Autocharge" label in the station view.

Autocharge is primarily supported on DC fast charging stations and only at stations that have been configured accordingly. AC stations and stations without MAC address detection capabilities are currently not supported.

8. What happens if I plug in at a station that doesn’t support Autocharge?

The session will not start automatically if Autocharge is not supported at that station. You will need to start the charge manually using your app or charging (RFID) tag as usual.

9. Can I disable or remove Autocharge?

Yes. If you no longer wish to use Autocharge:

  • Open the Virta app and navigate to Profile > Charging Methods > Autocharge
  • You will see the details of your registered vehicle, including the associated MAC address.
  • Select “Remove Autocharge” to deactivate it. Please note that it may take up to one hour to be processed.

Once removed, your vehicle will no longer automatically initiate charging sessions at compatible stations. You can re-enable Autocharge at any time by following the standard setup process.

 10. Is Autocharge secure? Can someone else charge with my car?

Yes, Autocharge is secure. Once enabled, only the specific car you registered, identified by its MAC address, can start a charging session linked to your account. However, please note that you will be responsible for all charges made by this car when Autocharge is active. If you sell or transfer ownership of car, please make sure to remove Autocharge to avoid unauthorised use.

11. Why Autocharge doesn't initiate?

If you run into issues, please:

  • Make sure you're at a supported station and your car is not already charging.
  • Ensure your car model is listed in the setup flow.
  • Try restarting the process.
  • If issues persist, contact our customer support for help.

12. What is the difference between AutoCharge and ISO15118 Plug&Charge?

Autocharge and Plug&Charge are distinct technologies. Autocharge simulates the functionality of an RFID card by identifying the vehicle to initiate charging. Plug&Charge utilises a decentralised system to authenticate the vehicle and authorise charging automatically.
